Squaring up

This is my work in progress and final design shots for my lyrics book using the pixelated or 'squaring up' process. First I had to find a photo on the internet that I wanted to use, turn it black and white, and print it off in the size 8x11cm. Then once I had printed it out, every 1mm all the way around the sides I made a mark and then joined them up to form a grid. I then labelled the squares 1-22 along the top and bottom, and 1-16 along the sides. This is what it looked like.
I then had to draw the grid out in my sketchbook but instead of marking it with 1mm gaps, I did 1cm, so that it was bigger in my book. With a pencil I then shaded in each square corresponding to the colour of the square on the picture. If on the picture it was half black and half white, I would shade it grey, or anywhere in the middle. This is my final design.

6 basic photoshop edits

This is my second '6 basic photoshop edits' post. The previous one was with a photo I found on the internet, this is with a photo I took myself. I created a black and white, hue/saturaton, colourise, layer mask/filter/gradient, light leaks, and levels effects on the 6 pictures. This is my final design.
To achieve this layer mask/gradient/filter effect I first got the photo I took and added the first step of this effect, the filter. I made the whole photo pixelated. I then put a gradient effect on it as you can see from the bottom left to the top right it goes from pixelated to normal.

Then finally to achieve this I added a picture of a bird and I blended it with the picture of the houses by selecting them both and clicking 'overlay' on the drop down menu

photos I have taken for my lyrics book

These are two photos I have taken myself that I am stuck between to use in my song lyrics book next to the lyrics 'I start my day upon the roof, there's nothing like this type of view.'
The first photo is the view straight out of my bedroom window and the second photo is a shot of the arrows flying over our apartment in Torquay.

I prefer the second photo but once I have come to a decision I will pick one of the two photos and then do 6 basic photoshop edits on the photo for my lyrics book.

6 basic photo edits in photoshop

To create 6 basic edits in photoshop I first decided on an image that I would like to use. I then opened it in photoshop, and decided which edit I wanted to do first. I started with the image open and then found different effects to use.
This effect is the hue/saturation effect. To adjust the colour of this photo you select hue/saturation on the drop down menu, then grab and move the line on the graph on the right hand side of the screen and it changes it different colours. You keep moving it around until you are happy with the colour it has produced.
This is the colourise effect. This changes the whole colour of the photo the same colour
This effect is called 'Levels.' It adjusts the dark, medium and light levels within the image. You can adjust how much dark/light the picture has by sliding across the arrows on the graph on the right hand side of the page.
This is my final design with all 6 photos together.

Work in progress shots / Final design

first I drew the image for my lyrics book into my sketchbook and then scanned it onto the computer.

then I put it onto photoshop, adjusted the threshold to make it bolder, and then started to play around with the colours until it looked how I wanted it too, using different effects, colours and brushes

This is my final design.

My Final Design

After scanning my pencil drawings onto the computer, I added colour on photoshop and this is my finished design for my lyrics book.

Drawing Tasks

Once we had decided on our song lyrics for our lyrics book we had to create 5 different drawings for the book. one left handed, one from memory, one using a continuous line, one in a shortening time, and one with the paper upside down.
number 1 was done with the paper upside down
number 2 was done with a shortening time limit
number 3 was done from memory
number 4 was done using a continuous line
number 5 was done left handed

Line Drawings

I found an image of a spilt glass of wine and printed it out then did a freehand observational drawing of it, scanned it onto photoshop and adjusted the threshold to achieve this.

the right hand side drawing is a traced picture off the internet and the left hand side is a freehand drawing I did just by looking at the image. I scanned these onto the macbook onto photoshop and then adjusted the threshold to get it to look like this.

Annotated Song Lyrics

Once I had decided on the song lyrics I wanted to use for my song lyrics book I started to brainstorm ideas and words to create the images for my lyric book. This is my brainstorm.

Pen Portrait

As practice for my song lyrics book I created a single illustration to improve line drawing skills.

Planning the page content

I began to plan my song lyric book by drawing out the template of the book. On the right hand side I wrote the lyrics that correspond to the box on the left with an image describing those lyrics. I did this for each 6 boxes, so the left template has images describing the chosen lyrics and the right template has the lyrics written in.

This is the plan I did in my sketchbook.

How I made my type face poster

I started to design my type face poster by using the letters that I drew in my sketchbook and then scanning them onto the MacBook and selecting each letter I wanted and copying and pasting it into a new document.

I then had to decide on each letter that I wanted for my poster and start to re size and move the letters around until I was happy with the positioning.

Then once I had finally decided on all of the letters I wanted to use for my poster...

I then repositioned, resized, and changed the colour of my letters.

This is my final design for my type face poster.

EVALUATION

What went well? I found what went well whilst designing and making my type face posters was resizing, repositioning and changing the colour of each letter individually. I found that I managed to complete my poster quickly and easily.

What didn't go well? Deciding on which letter to use in my poster was what I thought didn't go well, because it took me a while to decide which letter to choose out of all the letters I had to choose from. I found it a bit more time consuming than it should of been.

What did you enjoy? I enjoyed picking different colours for each letter and making a gradient effect throughout the poster. I also enjoyed drawing the letters and coming up with different designs for each letter.

What didn't you enjoy? I enjoyed everything about making my posters, there was nothing that I found majorly difficult or didn't enjoy, I'm happy with my final design.

POSSIBLE SONG BOOK LYRICS

1. Frank Ocean - Swim Good
That's a pretty big trunk on my Lincoln town car, ain't it?
Big enough to take these broken hearts and put 'em in it
Now I'm driving 'round on the boulevard, trunk bleeding
And every time the cops pull me over, they don't ever see them
And I've got this black suit on
Roaming around like I'm ready for a funeral
Five more miles 'til the road runs out

2. Angels - Owl City
Through the glass in my bedroom window
In the bushes far below
I thought I saw an unfamiliar shadow
Among the ones I so clearly know

I was sleeping with the night light unplugged
With a note on the rocking chair
That says, "I've been dreaming of the life I once loved,
So wake me if you're out there."

3. Coldplay - Violet Hill
It was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow, white snow

Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze down below

4. Frank Ocean - Forrest Gump
My fingertips, and my lips, they burn
From the cigarettes
Forrest Gump, you run my mind boy
Running on my mind boy
Forrest Gump

I know you Forrest
I know you wouldn't hurt a beetle
But you're so buff, and so strong
I'm nervous Forrest

5. Blackout - Wretch 32
When the lights hurt my brain
Sometimes I pray for a blackout
When the candles are placed
Nothing more I crave than a blackout
Let there be no light
Let there be no light, 'til the sunrise
Let there be no light
Only then will I open my eyes
Let there be no light

6. Frank Ocean - Super Rich Kids
Too many bottles of this wine we can't pronounce
Too many bowls of that green, no lucky charms
The maids come around too much
Parents ain't around enough
Too many joy rides in daddy's jaguar
Too many white lies and white lines
Super rich kids with nothing but loose ends
Super rich kids with nothing but fake friends
Start my day up on the roof
There's nothing like this type of view
Point the clicker at the tube
I prefer expensive news
New car, new girl
New ice, new glass
New watch, good times babe
It's good times, yeah

INSPIRATIONAL CREATIVITY QUOTES POSTER EVALUATION

what went well? whilst I was designing and making my inspirational creativity quote posters what I found went well was coming up with different fonts and ideas of how to design my letters. I found that resizing the different letters and changing them from black and white into a colour went well.

what didn't go well? one thing that I thought was difficult to achieve whilst making my posters was getting all of the letters in the right place how I wanted it and getting them in proportion with each other.

what did you enjoy?  I enjoyed coming up with different fonts for my letters and drawing them out and scanning them onto the MacBook and deciding on different colours for each letter.

what didn't you enjoy? I didn't enjoy changing the colour from black and white into a different colour because I did a gradient style so it was really time consuming and I had to change every individual letter one by one.

would you change anything? if I had the chance I wouldn't change anything about my posters because I am happy with the final piece and I think they look really professional.

How I made my inspirational creativity quote posters

I made my 'inspirational creativity quotes' posters initially by designing 4 or 5 different styles of each letter of the alphabet by hand and then scanning then onto the MacBook and opening it in photoshop.

I then had to choose each individual letter and copy and paste the letters into a new photoshop document and then once I had got my quotes written out I had to change the colour of every single letter from black and white into a colour.

These are my final designs.

Business Card Evaluation

EVALUATION

What went well? Throughout designing and making my business cards, I found the things that went well were the initial hand drawn design and thinking of different designs that I could use.

What did you enjoy? I enjoyed making different designs and trying out different ideas and finding different fonts for the design. I also enjoyed using the scanner and posting my hand drawn designs onto the computer through photoshop.

What did you find difficult? What I found most difficult was deciding where to place everything on my business card. I found it hard deciding on font sizes and how big to make the design on the front of the card and where to place it all.

Overall I think that my business cards look really nicely presented and professional and I'm happy with my final piece.

How I designed my business cards

I designed my business card by hand then scanned the drawing onto the macbook using photoshop to create my final design.

This is what my design first looked like when I was coming up with ideas for my business card.

I scanned on the bottom left 'contact me' design, and the top right drawing onto photoshop, then started to design my business card.

i then added colour

Then I printed my final design out onto card paper and this is the end result.
